Aristoxenus, a Greek philosopher and student of Aristotle, wrote in his Brief Memoranda of Harpalyke, a maiden that was in love with one Iphiclus but never had her feelings answered by him and eventually died of a broken heart. To commemorate her, a song contest among maidens was established in her namesake.
